Before you read this, realize Im not angry or something, just a bit frustrated and stating the facts

So, last week I posted "Midnattsol", which I expected would become one of my most popular drawings, because its clearly one of the best, and yet I was shocked at how little favs it was getting... And I mean, it has one of the worst fav to view ratios in my whole gallery, which just had me going "WTF?"

After thinking of possible reasons this could be happening, I thought of the theory that people werent faving it because of her being dark skinned/half black... Pretty outrageous claim right? Well, today I got the proof that I was indeed correct... My second Luna drawing, "The Gathering Wilderness", is completely different from Midnattsol in every way except for the character, and last I knew, cat girls are actually really popular, so that is DEFINITELY not the issue... Yet, this one again has one of the worst fav to view ratios in my gallery

Not convinced? The last time I had such a horrible ratio was with my pic "She is the Dark", which, guess what? Features a "tanned" character as well  Im not kidding, out of all my tablet drawings, these 3 are the only ones like this, and they have only one thing in common - skin color

Then this got me thinking, I look at the front page every day, a few times per day actually, and I dont remember EVER seeing a black girl there... Have you? Every day there are a bunch of artistic nudes of white girls etc, but NEVER any black girl, and I used to think it was just because no one did it, but now I see they just dont get to the front page because people dont fav them, lol

Of course, I can understand people having preferences, and so do I... As you can see, Im a lot more into pale girls than any other, I just love white skin in general, but does that mean I stop appreciating a drawing just because the girl is not white? WTF?

Its this bias that I just find completely ridiculous, it basically makes me think no one gives a damn about the artistic qualities of pics, because you can put out the most incredible drawing ever and if it features something people dont like on a personal level, they WONT fav it

You can see this a lot more clearly when it comes to fan art for example... If you draw a popular character like say, Haruhi Suzumiya, you can do a 10 minute doodle that looks like crap and it will still gets favs just because its Haruhi, LOL how can people be so biased and completely disregard the actual art? I dont give a damn what character is in it, if the drawing is bad, the character wont save it

The opposite is also true of course, a good drawing is good regardless of whatever is in it, Ive seen some amazing stuff around here get ignored just because the character is some sort of monster or whatever and people go "Ew ugly"

Oh well, luckily for me, my tastes go along with the majority so I wont be affected 99% of the time, but its still really sad that people act like this, and I just wanted to get it out

EDIT:(FINALLY ABLE TO EDIT THE JOURNAL WITHOUT GETTING AN ERROR, YAY :w00t:)

Ok people, stop making this about who faved or didnt fav Midnattsol... I have been here long enough to know you cant have any expectations with anything you post because often the drawings you consider the best will get ignored and the worst ones become popular instead... It blows my mind and it makes no sense, but whatever

That is NOT the case here, because there is a clear pattern, and thats why I provided the example of 3 drawings, all with the same traits, also if you are skeptical just read "misteredelanuit"'s post and see for yourself, Im not making stuff up

And this is an OBSERVATION, Im just stating facts, I dont expect anything to change, just disappointed that people can be so biased for petty reasons

I understand your frustrations, and cannot disagree with your facts. However, I would like to offer a different perspective for the reason. DA is not a "thumbs up/thumbs down" based website, it is only a "thumbs up" website. While it is clear that those who frequent DA show clear favoritism towards lighter skin, this doesn't necessarily imply an attitude that's necessarily AGAINST darker shades of skin. I know that this doesn't help those who prefer to create art based on darker skin tones, but I believe it's worth consideration.

Best of luck to your hope in humanity,
Mike

Art is very much about personal preferences a lot of the time, not just with characters or whatever but just with what material was used. And art can be very different and different people react to it differently.
Personally, I didn't think ''Midnattsol'' was your best work. I thought the drawing looked kind of flat and didn't capture my interest enough, the colors were nice though but they pretty much always are with your art.
I actually preferred ''The Gathering Wilderness'' because of it's more dynamic pose but I still find it a little stiff pose-wise.
And ''She Is The Dark'' is still kind of stiff pose-wise but the dress is very beautiful. I still think you can do better :)
Personally I love the white skin, dark hair, red lips look in art it pops out without being too busy and can be elegantly beautiful.
Honestly, ''Hide and seek'' is one of my favorites because of these reasons.
Though SOME people might react in a racist way, this is art and people favorite things because either it appeals to them or they think it could be helpful to them so we can't help that. Just letting you know this isn't the reason why I didn't fav all your dark-skinned artworks. I hope you don't take this badly....

This comes as kind of a surprise to me. xD; I actually really, really liked the Midnattsol picture. Skin tone hadn't really crossed my mind at all. If anything, the only non-artistic thoughts crossing my mind were "Kitty! x3" and thoughts related to the beauty of the character.

To be honest, they weren't that dark skinned at all (and I think what makes people think they're really dark is the lighting, since these examples seem to be in the shadows). And the sad thing is that most people who are considered white (or caucasian, to be more politically correct) are actually near to (or are) this color because they love to be tan. I agree, there's a bias, but there are biases everywhere. People are still being condemned because of the color of their skin or their race, and (to be frightfully honest, again) I don't think it will ever stop. Terrible, I know, but there's that crazy quirk humans have, and that's "You're not like me so I cannot tolerate you."

I also agree with the bias about the character being drawn. There's a lot of amazing original works that are little seen out in the world of dA, and there's a lot of fan art out there as well, both drawn with skill and lack of skill, but it's all art and everyone is entitled to showing it on this website. Though I primarily favorite artwork due to a personal preference, I also favorite if I see a remarkably done work of art that just so happens to relate to what I enjoy.

I personally love your work and style (especially the colors). Keep up the great job. ^^

I actually don't find that much tan skinned characters here in dA, but I do find them most attractive as the people who usually creates them has the most confidence in creating dark-skinned people. I guess I wasn't the only one who noticed this as well. xD

wow… i completely see that.

that sucks. i always favourite pics on personal preference, not really on talent or specific topic- but i guess i do have more drawings of white skinned characters than others. i don't deliberately try not to pick black or darker skinned drawings and colours, though.
